Juliette Binoche in Cannes with “Certified Copy”

Interview with the french actress protagonist in Film Festival: “For the first time I can say the word family with my partner”.

For Juliette Binoche case, talking about “shout of laughs” isn’t exactly metaphorical.
Her laugh is explosive and firing. It takes you all of a sudden, and shakes. She tells when she was a child and a host, who took her and her mother in a difficult moment, asked them to leave cause he couldn’t stand that noise.

That laugh is a syntom. Syntom of the impudence which made her writing in past 90′s a letter to François Mitterrand to help Léos Carax, that time her lover, with financial help for his movie. Syntom of the persistence that, for that movie Les Amants du Pont-neuf, made her stand three exhausting years of shooting in the role of a homeless.
Syntom of the courage she refused with the role in Jurassic Park of Spielberg for making Blue of Kieslowski.
Syntom of the freedom she accepted last year the “In-I” challenge, a show with and from the dancer-choreographer Akram Khan, in which she danced for the first time. Nowadays this will to experiment made her say yes for Certified Copy from Abbas Kiarostami, competing in Cannes Film Festival and in cinemas on 19th may.

This movie was born since an invitation in Teheran. You accept, didn’t you?
Yes. I wanted to work with Abbas, but they didn’t have an idea of the movie yet. We met in Cannes, then met again in Jean-Claude Carrière’s. He asked me “Why don’t you come to Teheran?”. It wasn’t the best moment considering the nuclear intimidations. I thought: “Why not!”. But then I said it was just one occasion, to see by myself.

And the idea of Certified Copy?
One day, in Teheran, Abbas told me about a story he had with a woman. I was taken. Then, he told me “You believed?”. It was the theme of Certified Copy. The fact I believed conviced him shooting the movie. It was moving to come back in Tuscany after The English Patient. And I saw all Anna Magnani’s movies, to find inspiration. I was astonished from iranian women, so dynamic, energic. I got hope: there’s always a way to survive.

It’s a “simulation couple” movie, with two perfect strangers…
I was interested in reflecting about the couple. I pose so many questions to myself. Like: “I’ve two children, a job, I travel all the world, maybe I can be alone. But it’s a deep need to fulfil with someone, I can’t renounce”.  Is it true that nowadays relationships don’t last forever. Society we live in feeds with so many desires that being home with man looks boring (laughs)!

What you think if I say “family”?
I think to my kids (Raphaël, 17 years-old, had with André Halle, professional sub, and Hanna, 10 years-old, daughter of Magimel) first of all. I’d like to give them ability to be free, to go for what they love, to search their way. I want them to see their fathers regularly. Then I think to my original family. My parents divorced and I see separately, but I try to have that sense of family with my sister, with meetings with children, nephews and with one grandparent per time. In my childhood we didn’t get cause we were so different, but now we’re tied. That’s real sense of family, with her. Right now, with my partner (argentine director and screenwriter Santiago Amigorena) I feel like really in a new relationship. For the first time in my life, with a man, I can say the word family.
