The word most apt in describing Dan in Real Life is charming. Usually I’m not a fan of romantic comedies, but this film is a bit different than the usual fare. True, it is a story about a budding relationship, but told from the man’s perspective.

What is also refreshing about Dan in Real Life is that it is a romantic comedy for the 40-something set. Maybe I’m not knowledgeable enough about this genre to know any better, but I found the plot interesting as Dan has to deal with three teenage daughters while trying to get over the tragic death of his wife. Dan in Real Life is a smart comedy that put a lasting smile on my face.

Steve Carell stars as the depressed Dan, who can’t seem to “get back in the game” and start dating again. It is as if Dan is stuck in time, but his daughters aren’t stuck; in fact, they are growing up fast. Too fast for Dan. Without giving away much of the plot, Dan and his daughters meet with his family on a weekend getaway at his parents’ beach house. Dan meets a new lady, Marie, at the local bookstore, but discovers that she is actually his brother’s new girlfriend. Of course, tension arises in the house as Dan and Marie try to smother their rising passion for each other.

The cast is a wonderful assortment of familiar faces. Dane Cook plays Dan’s brother Mitch, and Juliette Binoche plays Marie, the object of Dan’s desire. John Mahoney and Dianne Wiest play the parents and they make a great pair. The house is filled with brothers and sisters and kids, and there is always an activity taking place. And Dan is always distressed.

I watched Dan in Real Life on Blu-ray disc and I found the PQ to be above average, though nothing spectacular. The film was clean, with details, and a warm color palette. I found the transfer to be pleasing and acceptable. The audio track was PCM 5.1 lossless and was generally front-heavy with this dialog-driven film. Extras include a commentary track, some deleted scenes, and a couple of making-of featurettes. Overall, the disc is solid.
